The Fall of Osgiliath

The Fall of Osgiliath

“Many years ago, during the Second Age of Arda, Sauron, under the guise of Annatar, the Lord of Gifts, deceived the elves, and tricked them into helping him make the Rings of Power. At first they whole-heartedly received him, not knowing he was evil, but then Celebrimbor, their leader, discovered his dark secret after he [Sauron] forged the One Ring in the fires of Mt. Doom. Celebrimbor hid his rings and rebelled. Sauron attacked and laid waste to Celebrimbor and his people. During this time, darkness reigned. Many years later, the Dunedain of Middle-earth, and the Elves formed a Last Alliance and marched on Mordor. After a 7 year siege, they defeated Sauron and cut from his had the One Ring. With nothing left, his spirit fleed and his armies were leveled. But it wasn’t a complete victory, for the One Ring was not entirely destroyed. It was lost for years…
Until it was rediscovered…”

Civ3 modder Lord Malbeth returns with a new scenario, Return of the Shadow: The War of the Ring for ‘Civilization III Conquests’. The project, based on Tolkien’s The Lord of the Rings trilogy, features an accurate map of Middle-earth, 8 playable and 5 non-playable civilizations, specialized kings for each faction, a special Ring unit and associated quest to Mount Doom, and plenty of unique units. A complete civilopedia and pre-placed landmarks make for a polished and immersive game. Find a full list of features and the download here, at Civfanatics.com.

Version 1.3 of the mod features a reorganized tech tree, unit tweaks, 3 reworked civilizations, and new “flavor” graphics for some civilizations. The ‘Final Fantasy Mod’, a ‘Civilization III’ full conversion based on the popular RPG series ‘Final Fantasy’ by Square Enix, is now available as a public beta. Creator Hikaro Takayama has been tirelessly working on this masterpiece for nearly 5 years, creating much of the content himself. It is finally ready for public consumption as a ~500Mb download.

The ambitious mod features a variety of civilizations from the FF series: Shinra Corp, Dalmasca, and Dwarves, to name a few; each with unique units, buildings, and abilities. Keep in mind that this is still a beta, but Hikaro has put in countless hours to make the mod as complete and polished as possible. See his game narrative Final Fantasy Tactics: Super Advanced for a closer look at the mod.

«The dry sirocco wind whistles over the vast Sahara wastes. It is the wind of change…

It is now – between the years AD 1000 and 1600 – that the fate of North Africa will be decided. As three great religions – Judaism, Christianity, and Islam – meet and clash, great empires will appear, flourish and vanish again like flowers in the desert. You must struggle for control of land, of resources, of the people’s affections, and – most of all – of the all-important resources and the trade routes to them. Control the trade routes, and you can become rich and powerful. Lose them to your rivals, and you will wither.»

There are not very many mods or games which are dedicated to Africa and its history, but Plotinus tries to remedy that with his ‘The Desert and the Mountain’ scenario for ‘Civilization III’. In it there are ten new civilizations to plays as: Alwah, Beta Israel, Ethiopia, Ghana, Hausaland, Kanem-Bornu, Makuria, Mali, Ouaddai and Songhai. There are also five completely unique technology trees each with their own units, improvements and wonders, so the civs will all face their own distinct challenges with different paths to victory.

If you own ‘Civilization III: Conquests’, and you’re an aficionado of anything that is even remotely related to the Middle Ages, then you might want to keep on reading. ‘Medieval European Mod II’ is a total conversion spanning four eras and roughly nine centuries, from the early 8th to the late 16th. Thirty-one states are playable, including England, France, the Byzantines and the Fatimids, which should be enough to keep anyone happy. The mod contains three maps (regular, random map game, a map of Europe for 31 players, & one for 21 players), but five additional scenarios – such as Crusader States & The Hundred Years’ War – are downloadable from the mod thread.

Included in MEMII:

  • 31 playable medieval states, each with some unique features as well as differences based on religion, culture and historical location.

Northern Group: England, Scotland, Ireland, Denmark, Sweden, Rus, Novgorod
European Group: France, Burgundy, Castile, Portugal, Germany, Bohemia, Hungary, Poland, Lithuania
Mediterranean Group: Aragon, Italy, Sicily, Venice
Byzantine/Balkan Group: Byzantines, Bulgaria, Serbia, Armenia
Muslim Group: Khazaria, Turks, Tatars, Abbasids, Fatimids, Cordova, Almohads

  • Tech tree spanning four eras, from 700 to 1550 AD, with some civ- and religion-specific branches.
  • Over 120 different buildings/wonders, over 100 new units, rules and victory conditions modified to match medieval times, full civilopedia etc.
  • Simulation of crown succession / vassalage – conquered enemy capital cities can now function as additional Palaces, but you need a proper government that allows specific vassals.
  • Loads of custom artwork, old and new, by numerous CFC contributors
