Mod Realms Banner

We’re finally able announce the winner of our Mount & Blade Writing Competition (probably two weeks late due to some unforeseen circumstances). A host of great and imaginative stories were entered – 38 in all – which is a lot more than we had anticipated. Every one of you who entered have our thanks for taking the time to write your stories – we hope you enjoyed writing them as much as we enjoyed reading them! That said, there can be only one winner in this «jousting tournament», and that winner is:

I Am Winter

By Kono

«I am winter. I lived on gleaming white fields, in the foot of the Vaegir mountains. I remember the red doors and a hall of black stone covered in white sheets, I remember statues and fountains of my father’s estate. He was a good man, as far as a I can remember, but in my mind his face is blank and without colour. In his estate I earned my initiation into manhood, learning to ride and fight with sword and lance. I earned my spurs at twenty: too young and delusional, I took the vows unflinchingly, without thought. I was captivated by tales of battle and the martial vigour of combat. I was taught that war was glorious, a chance for the best to earn their place in history. “And if you were to fall,” they said, “your name will live on.” I thought myself invincible, I would not fall. My father saw me for the green boy that I was, and rode to war without me. He fell in battle, adding rage to megalomania.

Honour demanded blood payment to avenge my father. So I led a hundred men to ‘immortality in the scrolls of history’ guided by visions of glory and valour. Vengeance justified the lives my men - sweepings of my fief. Dead men every one. They who died for my honour.

Honour which I soiled, in my hour of ‘glory’. I still feel the rain on my face in my lonely nights, icy claws scraping at my skin. Snow turned to grey sludge, tentacles pulling on my horse’s legs, dragging it into a grey hell. The foe descended, phantom faces and demon mounts, howling for flesh in my fever dreams. I dug my heels into my horse and fled. It shames me still.

They cry for justice in my sleepless nights. My comrades, demanding revenge and honour in death. I knew everyone of them who died for my folly. Boys I squired with, together rolling my master’s mail in a barrel of sand. Men I hunted with upon my entry into manhood. Old men who I pelted snowballs at in my youth. They are with me every time I close my eyes, but age has blunted my memory and their faces are as one. I hear them though, their voices so thunderous and terrible and filled with anger. “Blood. Honour. Revenge.” they demand, every word embedding a blazing knife into me “Blood. Honour. Revenge.” But I am too old and spent to give it to them.

I wasted away in the cities of summer, where stone turns to sand and there are no clouds to blunt the piercing stare of the sun. Where a man burns in his guilt with no clouds to shield him from the wrath of the gods. I was shunned in this desert, where men stared with their faces under veils, where sinners run rampant so close to Hell. So I left, and wandered with caravans back and forth, all thoughts of home lost. I escaped my foes, and from the judgements of men. but could not escape my shame, my own fiery demon within me. Mocking me, taunting me, deriding me.

My body burns. My sight fled and my senses dulled, the colours of all things good beyond recollection. At day I beg and scavenge, my dignity long since forgotten. At night I am placed in the company of my comrades. Dawn comes and burns away my tears, not it brings no relief - only fire.

I am no man, but a rat in a sewer. Covering away where all rats go. Beyond use or redemption. A toothless, blind, broken, old rat. But a more knightly a rat than most. Sir Rat I am. My tongue may have forgotten the words, but my soul has not. “Protect the innocent, defend the weak, respect the gods, my life for theirs.” How I have abided by them. These words, I long to cry them out, to swear my oath again and this time fulfil them. But the gods have no pity for an old fool and my cracked lips do not part.

So I speak in tears, and pray in tears, the last treasures I have. Excuses and apologies my comrades would never accept. Yet still I weep, from my sightless eyes.

I am dying.
A man as old as I am should not be afraid of death, but I am.
Will I be forever entombed in my comrade’s hell?
Will I dine with my father behind red doors again?
Will I feel the snow beneath my feet once more?
The gods answer in the howls of the wind and the rustles of the trees. But I have forgotten their tongue and forsaken their love. Now so alien me.
For I knew too late.
I should have known amidst the melting snow of my battle. I am winter, and cold preserves…cold preserves, but fire consumes.»

Troy: Total War - Aristeia Banner

Written by Drizzt.

«After Menelaus’ marriage to Helen, they had a daughter, Hermione, and two sons, Nicostratus and Plisthenes. After a few years the Trojan prince Paris came to visit Sparta on an embassy from Troy. However, the goddess Aphrodite was plotting to give Helen over to Paris, and made her fall in love with him when she saw him. He managed to kidnap her and steal her away to be his bride in Troy. When Menelaus learnt of this adulterous kidnapping, he went to his brother in Mycenae and together they threatened war against Troy. The Oath of Tyndareus was invoked, and all the great Achaean leaders rallied to the cause of Menelaus’ marriage. When Paris refused to give up Helen, the Achaean army sailed from Aulis in Boeotia to attack Troy.»

‘Troy: Total War - Aristeia’s Zhuge Liang recently displayed one of the hero’s to be featured in his mod, set during the epic Trojan War. Menelaos was the husband of Helen and the king of Sparta, inheriting the crown from Tyndareus, his father-in-law. He is probably the most famous cuckold in history. As the mod is for ‘Rome Total War - Alexander’ each hero can be given a unique model. The team has taken advantage of this feature and given Menelaos a great look with an intricate pattern etched into his armor and shield. But don’t take my word for it, have a look for yourself at the team’s forums.

The Song of Taliesin Banner

«Around 580 AD, Ebrauc fell to Deiran Angles. Urien was the first to react to this. He set up a campaign against the Angles of Deira and Bernicia, leading the coalition of the northern kingdoms, gathering Rydderch Hael of Alcluyd, Gwallawc Marchawc Trin of Elmet, Morcant Bulc of Bryneich but also Aeddan mac Gabran of Dal Riada and other gaelic allies. The Britons won a series of victories, Gwen Ystrad, Berwyn, and Argoed Llywfein where Owein, Urien’s son, is supposed to have killed Theodoric, the Angle king. Urien claimed the area around Cathraeth, modern Catterick. Around 590 AD, the Angles were pushed back to the sea edge, and besieged by the Britons at Ynis Metcaut (Lindisfarne). But one of Urien’s allies, Morcant of Bryneich, was jealous of his sucess and ordered his assassination. Urien was killed and the british coalition disolved.»

Vacuus Lux Lucis - Music Preview Banner

Written by Drizzt.

‘Vaccus Lux Lucis’ is a mod for ‘Medieval II: Total War - Kingdoms’, and is one of the most eagerly awaited ones in the community. They’ve released some samples of the music we’ll hear, and they are a real treat. Seeing as how the mod is set in Dark Ages Britain, with a timeframe stretching from 620 AD and going all the way to 1050 AD, the music is very martial, with drums throbbing and lutes stirring your blood.

The choral pieces are fantastic, and really suit the setting. Of course, the music is as close to the original as possible, given present day knowledge. With the music implemented in what is shaping up to be a fantastic mod, I can only cross my fingers and hope for an early release. You can listen to the music and learn more about the mod right here.

Spartacus: Total War Banner

«The Parthians are a nomadic people who conquered and settled in the area near the Caspian Sea in the 4th century BC as part of the Dahae confederation. Since that time the Parthians, under their Arsacid rulers (named after King Arsaces I), have fiercely maintained their independence. The Seleucids have, from time to time, claimed to be the overlords of Parthia and, from time to time, have actually been strong enough to try and enforce their claim, but the Parhians outlived them and without the shadow of the seleucids, have become the dominant power in the region.»

‘Spartacus: Total War’, the modification which is focused on the gladiator uprising led by Spartacus, has previewed another faction that will be included in the mod: Parthia. Check out screenshots and renders of the Parthian units here, as well as much information on the faction.

The Town of Hopeless

Some of you may remember the cult game `Planescape: Torment´. Taking place in the same outlandish setting is the `The Planescape Trilogy´ by Rogue Dao Studios. Developed for the `Neverwinter Nights II´ engine, this massive three part modification is currently making steady progress judging by the animations and screenshots in their recent update.

All Loud on the Modding Front

May, 2009

By Augustus Lucifer

Darthmod Empire Banner

Welcome to the third installment of All Loud on the Modding Front, a look at what’s been going down recently in the modding community. Lots of things are happening in the months following the release of Empire, but sadly none of them have ‘Official’, ‘Tool’, and ‘Released’ in them. To get all the latest news, head on over to the Workshop and follow along.

And sit back, relax, get inebriated, and enjoy.

Empire: Total War Banner

Empire: Total War Modding

As an M2 modder I’m probably not the most qualified to speak on the happenings of Empire. I’ll be touching on a couple of things, but I encourage anyone who bothers to read this to check out the Index of Released Mods, Modding Tools, Tutorials, and Resources, which lists the vast majority of goings on.

Tools

…so you don’t have to use a sharp rock

No updates to the Pack Manager have come about this month, but that’s certainly a testament to its stability and usability. A couple of updates have been provided for the Mod Manager, notably the ability to determine which file conflicts have been generated by the base game setup, and improvements to the profile system for better management of load order setups. IF you don’t have the latest version (1.5 as of this issue), get it from the link below.

If you’ve been pining for the fields for a look at some of the models from Empire, pine no longer my friend, for just has come to deliver you from your model bereft abyss. The ability to edit and import models into the game is probably still quite some time coming, hopefully along with the official toolkit, but in the meanwhile you can open them up and give them a nice, long, stare.
